The word gombo is originating from Angola where it is named “ngumbo”. The gombo introduces in Americas by the slaves also indicates in this part of the world a ragout or a soup containing gombos.
The term okra comes from the “Gold Coast” where the autochtones called it “nkruman,” whose deformation gave much later the word “okra”.
The gombo is also called:
“asperge du pauvre” in the Antilles
“kanja” in Senegal
“will okra” or “Lady fingers” in North America and in Canada
“bamies” in Greece
“Bhindi” in India
“lalo” in Mauritius and Reunion.
“bahmia” in Turkey and, generally, in the countries of language Arab “Greek horn” in Lebanon
“gnawia” or “ganaouia” in Tunisia and in Morocco
